Rob Reiner, the Oscar-nominated director and actor known for All in the Family, This Is Spinal Tap, When Harry Met Sally… and The Princess Bride, and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead on Sunday afternoon inside their Brentwood, Los Angeles, home, authorities and multiple law enforcement sources confirmed.

Paramedics from the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a medical aid call around 3:30 p.m. at the mansion on Chadbourne Avenue after concerns were reported at the residence. Inside, firefighters discovered the bodies of a 78-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman with what appeared to be stab wounds, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Police say the incident is being treated as an apparent homicide.

The identities of the deceased were later confirmed to be Reiner, aged 78, and his wife, Michele, also known for her work as a photographer and film producer. The couple had been married since 1989 and shared three children: Jake, Nick, and Romy. Reiner was also father to actress Tracy Reiner from his previous marriage to the late director and actor Penny Marshall.

Detectives from the LAPD’s Robbery Homicide Division are leading the investigation, which remains active and ongoing. Law enforcement sources say that there was no immediate public confirmation of a suspect, and police have not yet released an official motive. However, multiple outlets report that the couple’s adult son, Nick Reiner, is being questioned by police as a person of interest, though authorities have not officially confirmed his involvement or any charges.

Neighbors and local media reported a significant police presence in the upscale Brentwood neighborhood, where the family’s estate sits. Prominent Hollywood figures, including friends and colleagues, were seen arriving at the property as news of the incident spread.

Rob Reiner’s career spanned more than five decades. He first gained fame as Michael “Meathead” Stivic on Norman Lear’s landmark sitcom All in the Family. He later established himself as one of Hollywood’s most influential directors, helming a string of classic films including Stand by Me, When Harry Met Sally…, Misery, and A Few Good Men. His work helped shape both comedy and drama in modern American cinema.

Michele Singer Reiner worked as a photographer and producer, collaborating with her husband on several film projects and carving out her own creative path in the film industry. The couple were recognized not only for their artistic contributions but also for their philanthropic and civic engagement.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through Hollywood and beyond, with tributes and condolences pouring in from public figures, fans, and community leaders. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass described the loss as “devastating” and noted Reiner’s cultural impact and advocacy work.

Authorities have urged anyone with information related to the case to contact the LAPD. As the investigation continues, police say additional details will be released when available.
