Marshawn Kneeland: Rising Cowboys Star Who Left a Lasting Impact at 24

Marshawn Kneeland’s story is one of ambition, achievement and heartbreak. Born July 8, 2001, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Kneeland attended Godwin Heights High School where he excelled both on defense and as a tight end. He posted 110 tackles and eight sacks as a senior, plus 20 receptions for 330 yards and five touchdowns on offense, showcasing his rare athletic versatility.
He went on to play college football at Western Michigan University from 2019 to 2023. In his final year he earned second-team All-MAC honors after recording 57 tackles, 4.5 sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss.
In the 2024 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys selected Kneeland in the second round, 56th overall, a clear signal of his upward trajectory., During his rookie season and into his second year, he worked to carve out his role on the defensive line, showing flashes of talent and dedication. He appeared in 18 games across the 2024 and early 2025 seasons, recording 26 tackles and one sack.
A highlight of his career came just days before his death: on a Monday Night Football game he recovered a blocked punt and scored his first NFL touchdown, a moment his teammates and his community celebrated.
But Marshawn Kneeland’s story also holds a tragic end. On the night of November 5, 2025, after a vehicle pursuit in Texas and subsequent events, authorities found Kneeland deceased from what appears to have been a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Dallas Cowboys issued a statement:
“It is with extreme sadness that the Dallas Cowboys share that Marshawn Kneeland tragically passed away this morning. Marshawn was a beloved teammate and member of our organization. Our thoughts and prayers … are with his girlfriend Catalina and his family.”
His death has sent shockwaves through the NFL community, with teammates, coaches and fans mourning the loss of a promising young athlete and calling attention to mental-health support in sports.
While his career was brief, Marshawn Kneeland left behind a legacy of perseverance, potential and the importance of human connection beyond the field.
