HUGE Gifts to HBCUs: Who’s Getting Millions and Why It Matters

In a powerful show of support for Black education, MacKenzie Scott has once again made headlines with her multi-million-dollar donations to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). These unrestricted gifts, spread across several institutions nationwide, are transforming financial futures, empowering students, and deepening investment in academic excellence.

The billionaire philanthropist, who has given away billions since her divorce from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has continued her mission to “lift institutions that uplift others.” Her latest round of giving includes new contributions to schools such as Howard University, Spelman College, Morgan State University, and Prairie View A&M University, among others. Each institution confirmed that the funding comes with no restrictions, allowing administrators to decide how best to use the funds.
Empowering HBCUs Through Freedom and Flexibility
What makes Scott’s donations stand out is their unrestricted nature, a rarity in higher education philanthropy. Instead of tying funds to specific projects, Scott gives schools the freedom to address what matters most: student scholarships, infrastructure upgrades, technology improvements, and faculty development.

At Spelman College, President Helene Gayle said the unrestricted funds have allowed the institution to “reimagine student support and modernize programs without red tape.” Similarly, Morgan State University announced plans to expand its scholarship programs and invest in community outreach efforts that encourage underrepresented youth to pursue higher education.
Prairie View A&M University shared that part of its donation will go toward developing new STEM initiatives and bolstering student mental health resources, areas that have seen increased need since the pandemic.
A Lifeline for Students and Communities
For many HBCUs, which have historically been underfunded compared to predominantly white institutions, these donations represent more than a financial boost, they’re a statement of trust and equity.
“MacKenzie Scott’s generosity is more than a gift; it’s a belief in our mission,” said Dr. David K. Wilson, President of Morgan State. “It means our students have a better shot at success, without the burden of debt or outdated facilities.”
The impact of these funds extends beyond the campus. HBCUs are known for producing a large share of Black professionals in fields like medicine, law, education, and STEM. Increased funding means more students can enroll, graduate, and contribute meaningfully to their communities, creating a ripple effect of empowerment.
Why It Matters
Scott’s latest donations signal a continuing shift in how philanthropy approaches racial equity and systemic change. By giving directly to Black-led institutions, without oversight boards dictating terms, she’s helping build generational stability within the communities that HBCUs serve.
As the schools roll out their plans, many leaders hope this wave of generosity inspires other high-net-worth individuals to invest in education equity.
“This is not charity; it’s a correction,” said one HBCU executive. “When you invest in HBCUs, you’re investing in America’s future.”
